Trains don’t seem so be my best friends these days. Already had some pretty annoying encounters throughout the week. And then Thursday comes, we arrive at the train station and what wonder, the next three trains are cancelled. Fortunately enough there are so many trains going to Amsterdam that we only arrived 45 minutes later than we planned. But sadly that’s the reason why we missed almost the whole performance of Hanna Benn, a dear friend to the guys of Son Lux and the support act for this tour. Additionally to the really nice beats of Hanna Benn paired with her beautiful voice, I also gotta say that she is incredibly beautiful and has awesome taste in earrings!
Afterwards, just on schedule, Son Lux started playing. The second song was already „Easy“ which was the reason I got into those guys in the beginning. Soon after one thing was crystal clear, Ian Chang, the drummer, is insanely good. It is just amazing what this guy can do with his hands – watching him feels like he definitely must have four. Meanwhile Ryan Lott, the singer and keyboarder, seems to be in some kind of trance while he performs, or maybe he just is in the element that was made for him. Furthermore Rafiq Bhatia seems to be the heaven of peace. He actually yawned sometimes during his breaks. Which just made him perfectly human.
Hanna Benn, was introduced back on stage at one point. Apparently she already wrote songs with Son Lux in the past. So she helped perform one of them: „You don’t know me“. After, what felt just like a few moments, Ryna Lott announced they would play one more song. After the audience replied with a very heartfelt „aaaaaaw“ he laughed and commented: „Well, not really. But let’s just pretend it is the last one.“ And it was a good one, the whole crowd was introduced to sing a part of the melody of „Dream State“, over and over again, with the band then playing along with it, which lead to a very intimate performance. It was amazing.
Afterwards the band went out, as announced, to come back to a crazy exciting crowd. After the performers reached their places it went silent in the room. But just for a few moments because some began clapping and whooping, the atmosphere was piercing until the crowd went wild again. You could feel the tension. Ryan Lott then actually thanked the people at Melkweg to be such a good audience. And I know, musicians say that a lot, but at this point he must have meant it. I am very happy to say that this again was a performance I can recommend to anyone. The friend who accompanied me just hugged me when the lights went on an we were both speechless for a moment, just happy to have been part of that.
After the concert I went to buy the new LP – Brighter Wounds – in pink. The guys actually came to the merch stand and started talking to the people out there. So as a „good fan“, I got my LP signed by all three and thanked the drummer for this amazing evening. I did forget to ask why they decided to bring out a pink version of the LP though. I wrote them a Facebook Message yesterday and hope they will reply. But I actually do not doubt they will.
